James Blake Tennis Player
by Joe Copeland
James Blake, an American professional tennis player was born in 1979. He was inspired to play tennis after hearing tennis legend Arthur Ashe speak at his high school.
Because he started late, he had a sense of unworthiness that several other professional men players talked him out of, most notably Roger Federer who once complimented him by saying "Now do you believe you can beat players like me, or even me?"
Blake started amassing a string of victories on the world stage, but was felled by personal tragedy in 2004. He broke his neck in an accident on the tennis court (I broke mine just a few years before); his father died of stomach cancer; and Blake himself developed a case of shingles which paralyzed his face on the left side and left his eyes blurry.
Since then, he's struggled back and earned the 2005 Comeback Player of the Year from the ATP, as well as the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year in 2008.
He still competes on the international arena and is currently ranked 96 although he has broken the top 5 during his career. He is most noted for his speed and agility, and his extremely strong forehand.
