Sunday Sport: Olympics Finale

Ja, vi elsker dette landet,
som det stiger frem,
furet, værbitt over vannet,
med de tusen hjem, —

The Norwegian National Anthem has been played dozens of times during the medal ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics of PyeongChang, as they have practically controlled the games, winning more medals than any other country.  As the Games wrap up tomorrow, it seems that their lead is invicible.  This is unsurprising, you might say, as they hold the record of all medals won in Winter Olympics.

Although Katie Couric might tell you because this is because Norwegians are born with skis on, this isn't really true, just an appreciative point of reference in this Winter mad country.

Behind Norway, there's a bitter battle between Canada and Germany for second place. The Canadians jumped in front of the Germans on Friday by winning three medals, including gold and silver in the women's freestyle skiing ski cross big final, but they missed out on a huge and expected chance at a podium finish in curling, where the men's team was surprisingly swept off by Switzerland in the bronze medal match.

Germany, meanwhile, earned a bronze in the men's biathlon relay, but the bigger prize came in hockey, where the men's team denied Canada a spot in the final in an upset win and will play the Olympic Athletes from Russia for the gold.

My present medal standings are:

1 Norway
2 Canada
3 Germany
4 USA
5 Netherlands
6 France

Hosts Korea, along with Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, and Austria may very well finish in the top ten, but Norway will remain in first place.

Most of the TV coverage Sunday will be replays, with a replay of the closing ceremonies, no doubt, in the evening.

Hasta la vista Olympics, we'll miss you for four years, but will use the photos for decades...
