Sport Sunday: AFL Playoffs set, USA beaten in Basket, PGA

The final regular season weekend of Aussie Rules Football has been played.  The season was so awesome, and the ladder so close, that where each team would finish was anyone's guess until the weekend's games were all played.

Congrats to the Geelong Cats on their taking of the minor premiership.  Geelong rebounded after last week's loss to finish on top of the standings.  The Brisbane Lions, who had great hopes this weekend of themselves taking the minor premiership, instead lost to Richmond, who took third, whilst the Lions finished second overall. Collingwood took fourth, continuing their four game winning streak.    Continuing their slide, with a second loss in as many weeks, the West Coast Eagles finished fifth.  Rounding out the top eight are the GWS Giants, and 6th place, the Western Bulldogs, and seventh, and Essendon, at eighth.  The top five teams all finished within 5 points of each other, so the competition was, indeed, fierce to the end.

18 teams began the season.  These eight teams have advance to the playoffs.  These will begin Thursday night, with a match between Essendon and the West Coast Eagles at their home, Optus Stadium in Perth.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Worldwide basketball was shocked yesterday.  The World Cup is a week away, and it was proven that the United States is no lock for gold.  Australia delivered that message to the world on Saturday.  For the first time in nearly 13 years, a U.S. roster of NBA players played an international game — and lost. Patty Mills scored 30 points, and Australia rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to stun the Americans 98-94.

Australia had never beaten the Americans, and the U.S. national team had been 30-0 all-time in Australia. The loss snapped a 78-game U.S. winning streak that started with the bronze-medal game at the 2006 world championships.  That was a loss to Greece in the Championship semifinals.  The Americans won the bronze there, and have since remained unbeaten.

In the upcoming World Cup in China, Serbia has already made very clear it expects to win gold, where NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo will lead Greece, where France figures to have a medal shot and now with the Australians absolutely knowing they can beat the U.S., will begin next week with no shortage of realistic title hopefuls.  USA returns to the court on Monday, for an exhibition game vs. team Canada in Sydney.  Australia next faces Canada in World Cup opener on September 1st at Dongguan, China.

PGA Golf continues today with the final round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Six people were injured Saturday when lightning struck a 60-foot pine at the Tour Championship where they were taking cover from rain and showered them with debris, Atlanta police said.  Play in yesterday's round was initially suspended after the lightning strike, and then suspended, to be continued this morning prior to the start of today's round.

Brooks Koepka leads the Tour Championship by one over Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele going into the final round of play at East Lake Golf Club. Following a suspended third round, Koepka touched off a 68 on Sunday morning by making four birdies in the 13 holes he played.

McIlroy made five birdies but a couple of bogeys leave him one shy of his four-major winning counterpart. Schauffele -- who won here in 2017 -- made a pair of birdies and had an ace on Sunday morning.  Top prize for today's tourney is $15 million.

Sports Sunday: New Year's Eve Edition

It has been quite the year in Sports, but you'll have to look elsewhere for your retrospectives.  New Year's Eve is chock full of sporting events, but the main focus is on New Year's Day.

The Ashes series was decided when Australia took the first three of the five Test matches programmed.  Nonetheless, some exciting cricket has continued as England came alive in the fourth test, this one at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds, and was only denied a win because of the great batting of Steve Smith, who hit a century for Australia, as they battled England to a draw.  The Australia skipper stonewalled the English bowling attack to remain unconquered on 102 for his third century of the series when the Test was called a draw late on the final day.  Australia only lost two wickets on the fifth day but coasted through after lunch to finish on 263 for four with Mitchell Marsh not out on 29.

It was just the second drawn Boxing Day Test in 20 years.  Alistair Cook, batting for England had a record breaking 244 to open, but in the final hours, Australia's Smith and Marsh salvaged the draw.  There was a total attendance of 262,616 fans over the five days. There was some criticism of the lifeless state of the Melbourne Cricket Ground drop-in pitch.  The series of Test Matches concludes at the historic Sydney Cricket Grounds, January 4-8.

In the United States 10 games in the final week of the regular season of the National Football League have playoff implications, but most of those are of teams who playoff possibilities could be altered, if they lose.

In only one game,  Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons — do both teams have a real  something at stake. It seems the New York Jets are always playing for glory against the New England Patriots, and seldom finding it.  The Pats are heavily favored in this game, but in Football, as in all things, pride goeth before a fall.  New England has certainly proved this time and again, a great franchise, but one who loves to be in the faces of all the other teams.  They win often, but when they lose, it is always a big loss.

The Minnesota Vikings will host the Chicago Bears this New Year's Eve.  As the cookies have crumbled the Vikings  no longer have a chance to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, but they can get a first-round bye with a win or a tie. Even if they lose, they still stand a decent chance of a first round bye.  The New Orleans  Saints (11-4) play the (4-11) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  If they win, the NFC South division is theirs, but they can also win it if the Carolina Panthers lose or if both teams tie.   The Carolina Panthers can win the N.F.C. South if they win and the Saints lose. They are favoured over the Falcons but the Falcons are battling for a wild card spot.

A Happy New Year to all of our readers. Thanks for your involvement and participation.

Richie Porte
While you were sleeping:  In Australia, Tasmania's cycling devil Richie Porte finally took home the trophy, winning the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under by an impressive margin. He was supported by his BMC Racing Team, although the  UniSA-Australia took the overall team competition.  Orica-Scott’s Colombian climber Esteban Chaves took second.   Australian Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) took his fourth stage win in this final stage of the tour in Adelaide, just edging out World Champion Peter Sagan. While Porte won outright,  the Subaru King of the Mountain prize went to Belgian Thomas De Gendt, riding for Lotto-Soudal.  Columbian Jhonatan Restrepo, (Team Katusha-Alpecin) took the Young Rider's Jersey.  “I am very happy… this is important for me, for my team and the sponsors,” said the 22 year old Colombian who finished in tenth place overall.

Zverev Brothers
Play continued in the Australian Open of Tennis, which
Rafael Nadal
continues until next Sunday.  Number  One Seed Andy Murry has just followed Number Two Seed Novak Djokovic out of the tournament, losing to unseeded Mischa Zverev (ATP rank 50) of Germany.  Rafael Nadal narrowly escaped defeat yesterday in a very exciting match with Mischa's better known brother, Alexander Zverev (ATP rank 24), also of Germany.  Their father, Alexander Sr., played for the Soviet Union in his day, and while Mischa was born in Moscow, Alexander Jr. was born in Hamburg.  Both brothers "represent" Germany.

Angelo Mathews

Theunis de Bruyn
In South Africa, Sri Lanka Cricket continues its tour of South Africa, this afternoon, at  Johannesburg.  A week ago, Sri Lanka were humiliated here, losing 16 wickets and they succumbed to their biggest defeat of the three-Test series. Conditions are different today, for limited-overs cricket. They may regard the T20I series as their best chance of upsetting the hosts.  Sri Lanka will need to be calmly led by an increasingly frustrated-looking Angelo Mathews.  He is only seven runs away from 1,000 T20 international runs.  South Africa's new batsmen Theunis de Bruyn has put in some very impressive recent performances.

Mohamed Salah
In Gabon, in Africa Cup of Nations Soccer today, Group A play will be held this evening, with hosts Gabon taking on Cameroon at the Stade d'Angondjé , and Guinea-Bissau taking on Burkina Fasso at the Stade de Franceville.  In their last four meetings stretching back to 2009, Gabon and Cameroon each took two wins.  This is the first ever meeting between Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Fasso. In Europe, League play now has ramped back up throughout the old continent, with the return of Bundesliga play this weekend in Germany.  True fans of each team will be excited today, but no major matches loom on today's horizon to excite the rest of us.

In the USA, NFL Football Conference Championships will be contested today and tomorrow.  Today, the National Football Conference Championship is on the line at Atlanta, where the hosts Atlanta Falcons will play the Green Bay Packers for the Championship, but also for the ultimate prize, a berth in the Super Bowl.  Nobody has stopped

Packer's Quarterback Aaron Rodgers during the Packers' eight-game winning streak, and the Falcons -- with a defense that ranked 25th overall, but nonetheless having reached this game, may be a challenge.   During the winning streak, Rodgers has thrown 21 touchdowns and just one interception while completing 68.9 percent of his passes for an average of 298 yards per game.  The Pack beat the Falcons at their October meeting.
