Sport Saturday: Virushka, Jumping, Bowls

The Sports story of interest to perhaps the greatest number of fans this week, worldwide, was in far away India, and it was not even a main event, but an afterparty.  Millions of young girls and boys were left heartbroken as the country's heartthrobs "Virushka,"  Bollywood's Anushka Sharma and Cricket's Virat Kohli tied the knot earlier this month, and this week saw their reception and subsequent departure for South Africa, where Mr. Kohli will be playing with the boys, Cricket boys, that is, as India begins their tour of South Africa.

Virushka

The India team has just finished hosting the Sri Lanka Tour of India, as readers of this space well know, which was for them a glorious conquest, despite the distractions caused by their team captain.   Virat Kohli's wedding reception in Mumbai saw some of the biggest names in Bollywood and Cricket in attendance.  Among the guests were cricketer Harbhajan Singh and Bollywood's king,  Shah Rukh Khan.   Harbhajan shared a video where he can be seen dancing with the king of Bollywood.

The happy couple was photographed at the Mumbai airport while stepping out of the bus. Anushka was spotted wearing a jumpsuit which she teamed up with a black jacket and white shoes, while Virat was seen in cricket jersey.  The couple flew to South Africa to ring in the New Year. While Virat will prepare for the upcoming series in which Team India will lock horns against South African cricket team in 3 Test matches, 6 ODIs and 3 T20Is, Anushka will spend New Year's Eve with him.

The 2017–18 FIS Ski Jumping World Cup is the 39th World Cup season in ski jumping for men, the 21st official World Cup season in ski flying, and the 7th for ladies. The season begins on 19 November 2017 in Wisła, Poland, and will conclude on 25 March 2018 in Planica, Slovenia.  The season will break from February 4th to March 4th because of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Action continues today in Schattenbergschanze, which is a ski jumping hill located in Oberstdorf, Bavaria, Germany. The hill has held two FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and has served as the opening round of the Four Hills Tournament on 30 December every year since 1952, as it does today.  Two of the Four Hills are in Germany, two in Austria, and the competitions continue January 1st, 4th, and 6th, which is a national holiday throughout Germany, Austria, and other countries.  German Richard Freitag currently is at the top of the individual male standings, with German Andreas Wellinger in second.  The men's national team competition, which competes again at the end of January in Poland, is currently headed by Norway.

College Football Bowl season continues with some major games today, those scheduled by the selection committee.  The Fiesta Bowl will return to Glendale, Arizona this afternoon, pitting Number 9 Penn State against  Number 11 Washington.  Whereas the Orange Bowl traditionally always hosted a game featuring the Big 12 champ, against Miami or another Florida team, this year the Miami based bowl will pit Number 6 Wisconsin against Number 10  Miami.  As is the tradition this game will again be played at night.  A noontime game will pit Louisville against  Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer Bowl, held at Jacksonville, Florida.

Sunday Sport: Kohli's Nuptials, Heisman Winner, Premier battles, Ronaldo as always

In international Cricket, West Indies tour of New Zealand continues at Hamilton, with the 2nd Test match, held December 9-13 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.  Today there are two important ODI matches.  The first continues the Sri Lanka tour of India at Dharamsala, it is the 1st ODI  of that Tour.  Afghanistan and Ireland are contending in their 3rd ODI of the Ireland tour of United Arab Emirates at Sharjah.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricket phenom Virat Kohli is "resting" from the remainder of the Sri Lanka Tour of India.   If you haven't been living under a rock, you have read the innumerable reports, now confirmed,  doing the rounds about Virat Kohli and Bollywood's gorgeous Anushka Sharma's big fat Italian Punjabi wedding, in what is considered, in celebrity circles, as India's wedding of the year.   The two have already flown off to Italy with their families. They're expected to tie the knot in the next few days, with a destination wedding in romantic Tuscany, and then move the party to Milan.  They are expecting to have a celebratory bash back in India on Boxing Day, the day before the December 27th departure of the India team for their Tour of South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Heisman Trophy, was awarded in New York on Saturday night to a player who started his Football career as a walk-on, before transferring to Oklahoma.  Baker Mayfield changed that Saturday night.  He  captured the 83rd Heisman in a landslide victory.  The balloting was unexpectedly one sided.  Mayfield collected 732 first-place votes and 2,398 points in the voting totals. Stanford running back Bryce Love was second with 1,300 points (75 first-place votes). Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, last year's Heisman winner, was third with 793 (47).  "This is unbelievable for me, being up here among these greats," Mayfield said upon receiving the award with past Heisman winners standing behind him. "It's something that words can't even describe. God has put me in this position that I'm so blessed, and a lot of times I wonder why. But it's such an honor to be up here. It's unbelievable."

Meanwhile, in yesterday's contest, Army  beat Navy in the last game of the regular season.  It was difficult to see the game, at times, given the abundant snow which fell during the game in Philadelphia.

Real Madrid departed for the United Arab Emirates hosted Club World Cup, to defend their title.  They showed they were ready for world class competition by thrashing Sevilla 5-0 in Wednesday's game, their last before departing Spain for Cup play.

In England's Premier League, a local derby will be celebrated, with the challenging match between Manchester City and Manchester United.  Both are the best at what they do. The difference lies in the emphasis.  Jose Mourinho argued that David de Gea is the best in the world after he equaled a Premier League record by making 14 saves in the 3-1 win at Arsenal last week. United have conceded the fewest goals in the division and De Gea has the most clean sheets, with a save completion rate of 86.1 per cent.  City’s Ederson, meanwhile, is the best on the ball. His 85.3 per cent pass completion rate shows his upbringing as an outfield player. “Modern football requires those skills because it’s changed,” he said.

Southampton will play Arsenal later this afternoon to complete a day of exciting soccer action.  Recent games between these two sides on the south coast have produced some emphatic scorelines – Southampton won 4-0 on Boxing Day two years ago to throw Arsenal’s title challenge into disarray, but in two trips to St Mary’s in 2017, Arsenal have scored seven and conceded none. Mauricio Pellegrino is expected to stick with in-form striker Charlie Austin despite Shane Long recovering from a calf problem as he looks to improve that record. Arsène Wenger will be without defender Shkodran Mustafi but Theo Walcott, who scored a hat-trick against his former club in January’s FA Cup win, should be available despite a tight calf. Arsenal is currently 6th in the standings, Southampton twelfth.
