Saturday Sport Geelong slays Goliath, Wrestling!

As previously reported, this weekend is round one of the Aussie Rules 2019 Football Season. The long months of no football, indeed the long weeks of preseason, have now come to  an end.   All of the teams are back, and the games should provide lots of excitement last evening. In a Friday night blockbuster the Geelong Cats defeated the Collingwood Magpies, in a thrilling match at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds.  The Cats outlasted Collingwood in a fascinating, yet scrappy round one contest, upsetting last year's Grand Finalists!

In a hard-fought bout, Tom Hawkins' classy finish on the run in the dying stages of the game was the defining moment for Chris Scott's side, as a new-look and newly resolved Cats side secured a narrow seven-point win.  The clash had seesawed both ways throughout a dramatic final term, before a Geelong team featuring six fresh faces and four AFL debutants crawled its way to the finish line to claim a 10.12 (72) to 9.11 (65) victory.

In this United States, this is the weekend of the great NCAA championships, Wrestling Championships that is.  The 2019 NCAA Division I wrestling championships run from March 21 to March 23 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Today is therefore the last day of the championship.  The 330 qualifiers for the 2019 DI NCAA wrestling tournament were announced Tuesday, March 12, with brackets and seeding revealed on Wednesday, March 13. 63 universities are currently represented in the tournament by their wrestlers.  Hometown favorites Penn State are currently leading the tournament, far and ahead of current place Ohio State, followed by Oklahoma State, Iowa and Missouri.  The Big 10 is dominating the tournament so far, with six of the top 10 spots.  The Ivy League's Cornell is currently in sixth place.   Each match lasts seven minutes unless ended early by a fall or a tech fall.

Penn State won last year’s NCAA Division I wrestling title, and the Nittany Lions are currently ranked first in the NWCA poll, and are dominating the tournament. The Nittany Lions won the Big Ten tournament this last weekend by more than 30 points, the first time they have won the conference title since 2016. They are chasing their eighth national title in nine years in Pittsburgh today.
