Saturday Sport: Champions

Champions.

There are many types of champions in the world today.

Cricket's ICC World Cup 2019 is currently underway in England.  This six week festival of 10 Nations' teams at the sport, will determine the top spot in the world in July.

In the USA, Baseball and softball teams the nation over are currently determining champions.  The College World Series will start later this month in Omaha.  Right now High School and College conferences and States are playing to the number one spot in their local territories.

The Stanley Cup finals will soon determine the champions in NHL Hockey in the USA and Canada. Both teams come from what may be described as top sports cities.    The Boston Bruins and the St. Louis Blues have so far each won one game in their best of seven series, and will play again tonight in St. Louis. Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist has been suspended for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final for delivering an elbow to the head of Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.   Grzelcyk is out of game three too, because of concussion protocol.

Today's Champions, though, have to be considered those who will square off in this afternoon's finals of the Champion's League, European Soccer's crowning glory.  The UEFA Champions League is an annual club football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations and contested by top-division European clubs.  This year's host is Madrid, Spain, but will not include participation of last year's champions, Real Madrid.

Rather two British teams are squaring off in today's competition.  Tottenham and Liverpool face off in Madrid, Spain at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, home of Atletico de Madrid. The match will bring in millions of viewers around the world as both English clubs fight for European glory, and about 70,000 lucky fans who can watch the game from within the stadium.

Sunday Sport: Champions and Challengers

Unhappy Liverpudlians, Happy Cavaliers.  Sunday Sport

The Brickyard.  Today is the day. The running of the 102nd Indianapolis 500.  The 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil is the premier Verizon IndyCar Series event, to be held today, Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend,  at the  Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana.  As always, the event is scheduled for 500 miles (200 laps).  The race was won last year by Takuma Sato, but Ms. Danica Patrick is the heart's favorite this year.  She won her first race at Indianapolis, and finishes her illustrious career with this last race today.

The month of May activities formally began on May 12 with the fifth running of the IndyCar Grand Prix on the combined road course. Practice for the Indianapolis 500 began on Tuesday May 15, and time trials were held May 19–20. Ed Carpenter won the pole position, his third career Indy pole. Carb Day—the traditional final day of practice, as well as the annual Pit Stop Challenge and Indy Lights Freedom 100, was held Friday May 25.

A real star of the show is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Constructed in 1909, it is the second purpose built banked oval racing circuit after Brooklands and the first to be called a 'speedway'. It has a permanent seating capacity of 257,325, with infield seating raising the grand total capacity to an approximate 400,000. It is the highest-capacity sports venue in the world.  Considered relatively flat by American standards, the track is a 2.5-mile-long (4.0 km) rectangular oval with dimensions that have remained essentially unchanged since its construction. It has two 5⁄8-mile-long (1,000 m) straightaways, four geometrically identical 1⁄4-mile (400 m) turns, connected by two 1⁄8-mile (200 m) short straightaways, termed "short chutes", between turns 1 and 2, and between turns 3 and 4.

We wish the best to Ms. Patrick and to all the racers today.

Fans of the National Basketball Association have reached as fever pitch of excitement, as the final rounds of both Conference championships have reached a full count.

In game six on Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics convincingly 109-99 to force game seven.  The game will be played tonight at Boston.

Last night, the Golden State Warriors performed the same feat against the Houston Rockets, beating them 115-86, to force their own game seven, which will be contested tomorrow night, Memorial Day, at Houston.

Real Madrid performed a feat previously unthinkable in World Soccer.  The Spanish giants retained the Uefa Champions League on Saturday night. They defeated Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev to lift the trophy for a third successive season. Indeed, Madrid are the Champions League winners in four of the past five years.  They have also won the Club World Cup in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

When last night's game was tied at 1-1 Welshman Gareth Bale, well known to readers of this space, made a spectacular bicycle kick, which inspired his team, and spurred them on to eventual victory.  Bale shocked the Liverpudlian Players with the artfulness of the kick, which is even clear from the photos of the event.

Congratulations to Real Madrid. Champions.

浦和レッドダイヤモンズ vs. Al Hilal Saturday Sport

Not your grandfather's Champions League, the Asian Champions League has been heating up in recent weeks, and has become much more interesting since it was started in 2003.   Saudi giants Al Hilal will attempt to end years of dominance by East Asian clubs when they take on Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds in the two-legged Asian Champions League final beginning Saturday.  Al Hilal are hopeful as they host Urawa in the first competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Clubs from the Asian Football Confederation's eastern regions have won the last five Champions Leagues, and 10 overall since the competition's first edition in 2003.  The west is particularly strong now, though, with both Saudi Arabia and Iran qualifying for Russia, 2018.

Al Hilal captain Osama Hawsawi stated that "in World Cup qualifying we faced both Australia and Japan and we qualified ahead of the former and defeated the latter.  There are strong teams in both East and West, of course, but it should be noted that two teams from the West qualified for the World Cup." Al Hilal has never won the Asian Champions League, but hopes to this year.  "We are determined to lift this trophy," Hawsawi said. "We reached the final because we worked hard and are intent on reaching this goal."

Urawa captain Yuki Abe was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2007, and he said he now wanted to lift the trophy again in honour of manager Takafumi Hori.  "I have had a lot of head coaches in my career, but Hori is one who has helped me improve, so I'd like to help win a big trophy for him," Abe, 36, said."  The winner of the final will take their place at the Fifa Club World Cup UAE 2017, alongside the likes of European champions Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, back on the continent, Soccer fans are gearing up for the Madrid Derby, Real Madrid vs. Atletico de Madrid.  Atletico has been playing in a newly refurbished stadium this season, and so this is the first such Derby played in the Estadio Metropolitano  "Wanda".  It is an important game, over and above the rivalry, because both Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid have been playing catch-up against Barcelona.  Only 900 of the 67,000 seats have been released to Real Madrid's fans.  Phenom Dani Ceballos, 21, will play in his first derby.  Real Madrid  has won only 7 of the last 11 games, whilst Atletico is undefeated in their past 11 games.

In the standings Madrid, in third, are eight points behind leaders and renegades Barcelona.   Atletico, in fourth, are also on 23 points, but has had terrible difficulty scoring.  Their last  15 games have featured one or no goals.  Seven teams have scored more than Atletico’s 16 in 11 games. But Real have their own problems upfront. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have only one league goal each so far this season. Valencia and Real Sociedad have both scored more goals than Real Madrid so far.  Attention shifts firmly towards club football for the next four months, with Madrid also featuring in the Fifa Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi next month.

In premiership soccer  Champions Chelsea face a stiff challenge to defend their Premier League title from in-form leaders Manchester City but will fight till the end in the race, midfielder Willian has said. City have won 10 of their opening 11 league games and sit at the top of the table, nine points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea.  "It's difficult," Willian told BBC's Football Focus. "Manchester City are playing very well but I think we can fight for the title until the end."  Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are second and third respectively, a point ahead of Antonio Conte's men.  "It is difficult to play when you were champion last season and to fight for the title again as every team wants to win against Chelsea," added the Brazil international.

Chelsea travel to West Bromwich Albion, who are 16th in the league, on Saturday.  Arsenal must win an "electric" North London derby against Tottenham.  Arsenal last beat Tottenham in a 2015 League Cup tie but have failed to register a league win over their neighbors since 2014, drawing four and losing two of the last six league meetings between the sides.  As Tottenham have risen to prominence over recent years, the derby has become more closely contested.  Arsenal are sixth in the standings, four points behind third-placed Tottenham and 12 behind leaders Manchester City, with six wins in 11 league games.

In the United States, in NCAA College Football, there is only one game today between ranked opponents, Number 24 Michigan (8-2, 5-2) at Number 5 Wisconsin (10-0, 7-0).   Should Wisconsin go undefeated they would most certainly go into the playoff.  Michigan is always a tough opponent, though, and could come away with a win today.  Wisconsin beat Iowa 38-14 last week to pick up its first ranked win of the year, and Camp Randall Stadium is always a challenging location, but  Michigan is more well-rounded on defense and should be a tougher challenge.

Sport Sunday: Los Campeones, Las Copas, Steele Sidebottom

Champions League:  It would be impossible to start a sports overview today without congratulating Real Madrid for their masterful win over a struggling Juventus in last night's Champions League European Cup final at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales. The astounding game inspired sportswriters to launch into a torrent of statistics, almost as many as baseball, only a few of which we will report in this space.
Claudio Marchisio

While Juventus played well for much of the game, it was clear that toward the end they were phoning it in, resigned to the Real Madrid victory.  Many Juventus players are commended for their play, among them Claudio Marchisio, who was sent in to right a sinking ship, and Mario Mandžukić, who kicked their only goal.  Meanwhile, CR7 garnered two goals, the second being the unbelievable 600th goal of his professional career.  Midfielder Casemiro and sub Marco Asensio kicked Real Madrid's other two goals, in their masterful 4-1 victory over Turin's Juventus. RM Coach Zidane has rotated players and concentrated on collective wins this season, the non Ronaldo goals in the game clearly showed that everyone matters on the team.  Last minute cameo by injured Gareth Bale, on his home territory of Wales, excited the crowds immensely.

In Bermuda:  The America's Cup  This past week saw the qualifying rounds in the America's Cup in a round robin competition to determine which nation's ships would pass to the semifinals.  Today, these semifinals begin with series of races lasting until Thursday.  The next two rounds determine who, eventually, will challenge team USA for yachting dominance.  New Zealand and Great Britain will meet up in two races today, and Sweden will contend with Japan in two races today.  These pairs will race twice a day through Thursday, and then the winners of those series will ultimately meet up to determine the finalist.   Live coverage from Bermuda's Great Sound has been stunning, even for the fan of no sports.

In the USA, the National Basketball Association Finals continue today.  The Cleveland Cavaliers lost game one to Golden State Warriors, being overwhelmed 113-91.  The Warriors seized a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series that continues today in Oakland, California.  While the Warriors are making NBA history as they did last year, they know the feeling would be bittersweet without a title. Last year the Cavaliers made the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history, rallying from 3-1 down to take the title.  It is said that the Warriors are so strong, they could make an undefeated run to the title.  Basketball is basketball, though, and surprises are possible, even in the heavily scripted ego fest called the NBA.  Today's should be a good game.

In Australia:  In Aussie Rules only contest today, the Fremantle Dockers take on the Collingwood Magpies at Domain Stadium in Perth.  Fremantle and Collingwood meet for the 28th time and the Magpies hold the advantage with 16 wins to 11. Collingwood, looking very much like Juventus in the black and white stripes,  is aiming for three consecutive wins for the first time since rounds 14-16 in 2016, but the teams are evenly matched, and like to alternate victories.
Steele Sidebottom

Fremantle's resurgence hit a speed bump against Adelaide last round, and the Dockers need to bounce back to avoid a potentially swift tumble down the ladder. The midfield battle looms as the key this Sunday, with Collingwood's powerful force,  led by Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and, how perfect is this,  Steele Sidebottom, ready to resist opponents Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale, Stephen Hill. The Magpies have hit some reasonable form and a third-straight win would keep Nathan Buckley's men right in top-eight contention.

Saturday Sport: Champions League and Sydney Crosby

Cristiano Ronaldo and Soccer.  Soccer and Zinedine Zidane.  Juventus and Soccer.  As sports enters the Summer doldrums almost all of the attention of the sporting world today concentrates on Association Football, commonly known as Soccer in much of the world.

In Wales, this evening, the Champions League final will be contested and the European Cup awarded.  Welshman, and Real Madrid phenom Gareth Bale will be right at home this evening, if he returns from the disabled list to be able to play on home soil. He and blog favorite Cristiano Ronaldo will try for his fourth Champions League victory in Real Madrid's match against Italy's Juventus, played at the Principality Stadium,  Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.   This time of year, the benefits of an indoor stadium are less obvious, but the climate controlled field will definitely heat up with 90  minutes of championship action.

Real Madrid are aiming for their 12th European Cup, and looking to repeat last year's win, a feat which no team has been able to accomplish.  In the historic standings Real Madrid are far ahead of second best, AC Milan, who have 8 European cups.  Juventus has lost six European Cup finals, the most of any team. Juventus has also won two, but the last of those was 21 years ago, so they are hungry for a win.

Real Madrid Coach, Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, has been rotating players in and out all season, so the team has learned to be flexible and to harness fresh energy.  Juventus is eager, though, and with all of the bravado for which the Italians are known.  Tune in with us to watch the Champions League Final this evening!

In Scandinavia:  The European Tour Golf continues with the Nordea Masters, today in  third-round play at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club in Malmö, Sweden. Open Champion Henrik Stenson is back playing at his home course, and was a strong favorite as play began.  “It feels good to be back in Sweden and Barsebäck again. It’s extra fun to play on the golf course that I grew up on and I’m looking forward to the week," Stenson said.  “Thanks to all the golf that I’ve played here I know where to place the ball and where not to be and how to adjust myself to the greens and fairways and so on. So it’s an advantage to have played at Barsebäck.”

Going into today's play, Welshman Jamie Donaldson may draw daytime attention briefly away from the Champion's League final, as he leads the field at 8 under par.  Second is Roman Renato Paratore, at 6 under par.  Third place heading into today's action is shared by three golfers at 5 under par, Frenchman Benjamin Hebert, and Englishmen Graeme Storm and Max Orrin. Denmark claims the only Scandinavian currently in the top ten, Thorbjørn Olesen, who shares sixth place at 4 under par.  Stenson is far down in the standings at one under par, but in golf almost anything can happen.  Skol!

In the United States:  the Pittsburgh Penguins travel to the Nashville Predators for tonight's  Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Pittsburgh, captained by blog favorite Sydney Crosby,  has won the first two games at home to go ahead on the series, and are leading two games to zero.  The series is the best of seven.  Fans admit that the Penguins have been outplayed by the Predators in the first two games.  The Nashville team has made many more shots than the Quaker Staters, the Penguins have come through with accuracy, though, getting the goals when it counts to win both games.

Nashville fans have been known to throw catfish onto the ice as a show of support for their team.  Tonight maybe the Penguins will be distracted, or maybe they will toy with the Predators like a Penguin toys with fish before eating. We'll know they are serious if they make the sign of the Cross and say Grace before the game.

The Round of 16 finished up on Tuesday for this season's UEFA Champions League, and there were definitely some big results to study.  However, your most exciting play had to be Douglas Costa's perfect cross to Robert Lewandowski for the big goal in Bayern Munich's extra time win over Juventus.  It was poetry in motion!
