Sports Update
Sports weekend, Saturday Sport, Sport Sunday...
Here at SR we like to keep you updated each weekend on World
Sport. Sometimes we don't. Usually, that means that we have something
else to do with the Friday or Saturday night when the update is published. Sometimes that includes sports, sometimes it
involves much more interesting activities.
Following world sport can be a big task, in addition to proving minimally
adequate coverage of American Sports, wanted by many of our US readers (try to
avoid talking about baseball for a couple of months and feel the backlash I
once did).
Also, we have never found any sort of comprehensive calendar
of all pro or major sporting events in the world day by day, or even weekend by
weekend. It can be a bigger job than you
might think, trying to track down and makes sense of Cricket matches in India,
the AFL from Australia, Soccer from Spain and England, and the NFL on a given night.
The entire world probably already knows the results of the
Club World Cup. We usually report on
upcoming matches in a given day, not so often on the results. The Club World Cup finals were held on
December 22nd, and around here got lost in the shuffle. "Home team" Al Ain, surprised worldwide
soccer and Argentina's River Plate by beating them in a 2-2 tie (with a 5-4
shootout) to reach the finals. River
Plate took third place in the tournament, beating Japan's Kashima Antlers
4-0.
Al Ain did not fare so well in the finals. Real Madrid completed a hat-trick of FIFA
Club World Cup triumphs by winning 4-1 in the final. This was no surprise to Real Madrid fans, but
might have been a surprise to Cristiano Ronaldo, no longer with the Blancos,
and to Barca fans everywhere. Luka
Modric opened the scoring for Real in the first half, before goals from Marcos
Llorente and Sergio Ramos made the game safe after the break. Tsukasa Shiotani scored a consolation goal
four minutes from the end, but an own goal from Yahia Nader in the last few
seconds restored Real's three-goal advantage to ensure they are club champions
of the world once again.
The result marks the third Club World Cup triumph in a row
for Los Blancos after winning three straight Champions League trophies during a
golden era under former coach Zinedine Zidane.
The outlook for the season, which has been uncertain without Zidane or
Ronaldo, has been improved by this third win in the Club World Cup.
In the United States of America, the divisional round of the
National Football League playoffs took place this weekend. Winners in the four games will play each
other in next week's Conference Championships, with those winners advancing to
the Super Bowl on February 3rd.
In the weekends AFC games, the New England Patriots beat the
Los Angeles (formerly of San Diego) Chargers 41-28. Meanwhile in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs
beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-13. In
the National Football Conference, the Rams (still of Los Angeles) beat the Dallas
Cowboys (still of Texas) by a score of 30-22.
In the other competition, the New Orleans Saints beat the Philadelphia
Eagles 20-14.
This sets up the Conference Championships, to be held next Sunday. In the first game, the Rams will travel to
New Orleans, to take on the Saints just after dinner. The suppertime game will see the New England
Patriots leave the safe and rousing confines of their Foxboro home, to travel
to Kansas City to meet the Chiefs.
More on those games next week, if we at the blog have nothing
better going...

Sport Sunday: Chelsea, Horses, and the NFL
Yesterday was the glorious end to the 2017 thoroughbred
horseracing season, with the running of the Breeders' Cup at the Del Mar
Racetrack in California. Tens of
millions of dollars were awarded in two days of racing leading up to the big
event, the Breeders' Cup Classic. 187
horses were signed up for the races, with a record 46 European horses
entered. Gun Runner left Arrogate in the
dust in his final race with a wire-to-wire win in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Both entered Saturday night's Classic as co-favorites at 2-1 odds, but it was
Gun Runner, trained by Steve Asmussen, who jumped out to a half-length lead at
the quarter mile and held on to claim his first win in three tries over the
defending Breeders' Cup Classic champion. Arrogate, who finished 5th in the race, will
now be put out to stud, just rewards, it would seem, to a successful
career.
Week 9 of National Football League action was underway
already Thursday, with the New York Jets 34-21 victory over the Buffalo
Bills. As always, the big NFL day is
Sunday, with 11 games on the schedule.
NFC North action will be played out before the nation on Monday Night
Football, as the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions battle it out. Fellow NFC North teams the Chicago Bears and
the Minnesota Vikings both have a bye week this weekend. This is an important week for the Arizona
Cardinals, who this weekend battle the San Francisco 49ers. They currently have a losing season. The Cardinals will bring a shaky quarterback
in to carve up the 49ers’ weak passing defense, Drew Stanton. Beating San Francisco would draw
Arizona back to .500, but injuries to its top QB and RB will make it a tenuous
trip outside of a losing record.
In England's premiership soccer: Players Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku will
be under pressure to fire their teams back into the Premier League title race
when the misfiring strikers clash in Chelsea's showdown with Manchester United
on Sunday. Chelsea forward Morata and
United front man Lukaku were the toast of their clubs after celebrating their
close-season transfers with a barrage of goals.
But, with Chelsea and United battling to keep pace with leaders
Manchester City, Morata and Lukaku have lost their midas touch at the wrong
moment, putting them under the microscope at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
Lakaku despite his high salary, has been on a scoring droughth since
September. United fans have grown
frustrated by Lukaku's lack of contributions outside the penalty area,
prompting Mourinho to chastise Old Trafford crowd for failing to give the
striker enough support in last weekend's win over Tottenham. At 24, he conceded, he still has some
progress to make.
Alvaro Morata has
stepped up for his team, at least initially, with seven goals in his first seven games following his club record
£58m move from Real Madrid. He likewise
has a droughth in his last six games. A
win at the bridge would do a lot towards turning the season around. Meanwhile,
most prognosticators foretell an
Arsenal defeat at Manchester City tomorrow.
Man City is at the top of the league, and the Gunners face a heavy
challenge. City have overwhelmed much of
what they faced in winning their past eight league games and they should make
it nine on the trot against Arsenal. The attacking force of Sergio Aguero,
Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane, supported by Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva
should be too much for Arsenal’s fragile defence to handle. Man City has not lost anywhere in any play
since April, when they last lost, but that lost was, significantly, to
Arsenal. After their Wednesday Champion's
League win over Napoli, they are solid in their play, but still this should be
an interesting game to watch.
