Sport Sunday New Year's Day Edition
Sport Sunday:
In Canada, hockey season is in full swing. New Year's Day means a Winter Classic! The Detroit
Red Wings will visit the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Centennial Classic in
Toronto. The Original Six rivals head outdoors to celebrate the National Hockey
League's 100th anniversary.
In the United States: the last Sunday of regular season NFL means
Football.
Sunday night football will bring Green Bay (9-6) at Detroit (9-6) in a showdown for the NFC North title (with the loser possibly earning a wild-card berth). Aaron Rodgers has thrown 11 Touchdowns and 0 Interceptions on Green Bay's current five-game winning streak, but Detroit has been very strong at home, and have been winners of their last six games at Ford Field.
NCAA Basketball Sunday pits Syracuse vs. Boston
College in an ACC opener at Conte Forum. Then-freshman Tyler Lydon's 20 points
led the Orange to a 75-61 win here last year.
The day also features Penn State at Rutgers in Big Ten play in
Piscataway. Nittany Lions freshman Lamar Stevens and Rutgers junior Deshawn
Freeman are forwards to watch. Penn State prevailed 70-58 here last season. Marquette, coming away from a convincing win
at Georgetown, visits Seton Hall this afternoon. The basketball day concludes this evening
with Washington State at Washington. Wazzu senior forward Josh Hawkinson and
Huskies freshman star Markelle Fultz highlight this Pac-12 opener at Alaska Airlines
Arena. UW swept last season's series 99-95 in OT.
England's Premier League soccer brings Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace and Watford vs. Tottenham. Tottenham is currently leading in that game 4-0. Most other national leagues, in Europe and elsewhere, are on rest this week, some for several weeks.
In Cricket, tomorrow (or today already for
some of you) South Africa vs. Sri
Lanka, 2nd Test, begins at Cape Town, January 2-6, 2017. South Africa is heavily favored, as Sri Lanka
is coming from a defeat at Port Elizabeth, and has had only a day to rest and
practice. South Africa coach Russell Domingo said "We
want to win the Test series but more important is the brand of cricket we want
to keep playing. We want to play it positive and aggressive..."
