Saturday Sport
Saturday Sport:
In Australia, this is the last weekend of the
Australian Open of Tennis, which has proven itself, once again, to be one of
the most exciting Grand Slam contests year to year. Sometimes stormy Sisters Serena and Venus
Williams will play each other in the Australian Open finals today. No wire rackets. Ever. Nadal
muscled his way into tomorrow's men's finals with wins while you were
sleeping.
Winter Sports continue their big competitions today. In Ostrava, Czech Republic, the European
Figure Skating Championships are being held today with the Free Dance Competition. FIS
World Cup Skiing men's downhill contests
will be broadcast from Garmisch, Germany.
In the United States: the Extreme Sports Winter X Games 20 are being
held this week at Apsen, Colorado. Day 2
of the action included freestyle skiing (men's Superpipe) and snowboarding
(men's Big Air). Day 3 of the action-sports festival will include freestyle
skiing (men's slopestyle) and snowmobiling (freestyle).
Golf never seems to be out of season. Third-round play in the Farmers Insurance
Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Cal. First contested in 1952 as
the San Diego Open, this tournament was known as the Buick Invitational from
1992 until 2009. In Qatar: Third-round
play in the Qatar Masters in Doha will be held. This is part of the European Golf Tour.
In the United States: In NCAA Basketball, the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish travel to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Irish juniors Bonzie Colson and Martinas Geben
muscle inside with Tech big man Ben Lammers in ACC play in Atlanta. Last year in South Bend, the Irish lost by
eight. DePaul leaves Chicago to travel
to Creighton. The Blue Demons got 32 points from guard Eli Cain in their last
game, a loss to Butler. 7th ranked Creighton dropped their first game without
Mo Watson last Saturday to Marquette 102-94, the first time since a 2OT 2008
game against Peoria's Bradley University when an opponent has gotten 100 points
on them. Marquette went on to beat top
ranked Villanova on Tuesday, yet remains unranked. In Track and Field: U.S. New Balance Indoor Games in Boston.
Entrants include Olympic gold medalists Matthew Centrowitz, Jenn Suhr and
Ekaterini Stefanídi.
In horse racing, the inaugural $12 million Pegasus
World Cup at Gulfstream Park takes place in Hallandale, Florida. Impressive
steeds Arrogate and California Chrome, 1-2 in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic,
head the expected field in what becomes the world's richest race, surpassing
the Dubai World Cup.
In French La Ligue play today, Lyon meets Lille, Angers meets Metz , AS Nancy
Lorraine meets Bordeaux, Bastia meets Caen, Lorient meets Dijon FCO, and Stade Rennes meets Nantes. Paris Saint-Germain's ultras have
threatened to boycott Sunday's massive Ligue 1 game against AS Monaco because
of ongoing problems with access to the Parc des Princes. Many of these
superfans are either banned altogether (sacre bleu) or given only restricted
access to certain parts of the stadium.
