Saturday Sport: Heisman, Football, Starc vs. Kohli

US NCAA Football Bowl Season begins Saturday, December 15th, with no fewer than 6 Bowls.  Already, the BCS National Championship has been set, featuring Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama and Oklahoma.  The first two will play each other in the Cotton Bowl on the 29th of December, while the latter two square off, the same day,  in the Orange Bowl.  Winners will play in a month's time in the national championship game, this year scheduled for Santa Clara, California, on Monday, January 7th.

Saturday College Football has a single game, the annual matchup between the Naval Academy and West Point, Army vs. Navy.  This game is chock full of tradition, this is the 119th meeting between the two teams, so a good watch from at least half an hour before the game, until fans and cadets from both academies sing each others' school songs after the game is won by one of them.  Navy has been the biggest winner of the years, and leads the season. Army who had several difficult season, this year is ranked in the top 25, and will not end its season at the game, instead looking ahead to a bowl game.

The Army-Navy rivalry has often been known as patriotic — and for years, one of the most lopsided in sports. Navy hooked an anchor to the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy with a series-best 14-game winning streak from 2002-2015. President Trump will become the 10th Commander in Chief to watch the game.  By tradition he will conduct the coin toss before the game, and at half time will walk across the field, to sit on the opposite side during the second half.

Today's game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. If history foretells, President  Trump will likely see a close call: the last three games have been decided by a total of 9 points and only once since 2010 has a team won by more than a touchdown.  Army will play Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl and was ranked for the first time in 22 years. But for the upper classmen who experienced each milestone, no thrill has compared to snapping the miserable losing streak to Navy in 2016.

When the announcement was made of the finalists for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, history was made as well. For the first time in 84 years, the top three vote-getters are quarterbacks of color: Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins.   The real competition appears to be between Kyler Murray, the best player from the state of Texas for many decades, and Tua Tagovailoa, who has been on fire this year, and has made a name for himself by stellar play.  Murray is also a top baseball player, and had already signed a multi-million dollar pro contract with the Oakland As who game him leave to play a final season of College Football.  What a season it has been!  The winner of the award will be announced this afternoon in New York City.

The greatest Cricket in the world is being played today in Adelaide.  India continues their tour of Australia, meeting the hosts in the first test at the Oval.  Today is day three in the match, which is currently being led by India, and the match is in the second innings.  Mitchell Starc is currently bowling, along with Nathan Lyon.  K.L. Rahul and Murali Vijay are batting for India and are currently not out.

Sunday Sport: Kohli's Nuptials, Heisman Winner, Premier battles, Ronaldo as always

In international Cricket, West Indies tour of New Zealand continues at Hamilton, with the 2nd Test match, held December 9-13 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.  Today there are two important ODI matches.  The first continues the Sri Lanka tour of India at Dharamsala, it is the 1st ODI  of that Tour.  Afghanistan and Ireland are contending in their 3rd ODI of the Ireland tour of United Arab Emirates at Sharjah.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricket phenom Virat Kohli is "resting" from the remainder of the Sri Lanka Tour of India.   If you haven't been living under a rock, you have read the innumerable reports, now confirmed,  doing the rounds about Virat Kohli and Bollywood's gorgeous Anushka Sharma's big fat Italian Punjabi wedding, in what is considered, in celebrity circles, as India's wedding of the year.   The two have already flown off to Italy with their families. They're expected to tie the knot in the next few days, with a destination wedding in romantic Tuscany, and then move the party to Milan.  They are expecting to have a celebratory bash back in India on Boxing Day, the day before the December 27th departure of the India team for their Tour of South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Heisman Trophy, was awarded in New York on Saturday night to a player who started his Football career as a walk-on, before transferring to Oklahoma.  Baker Mayfield changed that Saturday night.  He  captured the 83rd Heisman in a landslide victory.  The balloting was unexpectedly one sided.  Mayfield collected 732 first-place votes and 2,398 points in the voting totals. Stanford running back Bryce Love was second with 1,300 points (75 first-place votes). Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, last year's Heisman winner, was third with 793 (47).  "This is unbelievable for me, being up here among these greats," Mayfield said upon receiving the award with past Heisman winners standing behind him. "It's something that words can't even describe. God has put me in this position that I'm so blessed, and a lot of times I wonder why. But it's such an honor to be up here. It's unbelievable."

Meanwhile, in yesterday's contest, Army  beat Navy in the last game of the regular season.  It was difficult to see the game, at times, given the abundant snow which fell during the game in Philadelphia.

Real Madrid departed for the United Arab Emirates hosted Club World Cup, to defend their title.  They showed they were ready for world class competition by thrashing Sevilla 5-0 in Wednesday's game, their last before departing Spain for Cup play.

In England's Premier League, a local derby will be celebrated, with the challenging match between Manchester City and Manchester United.  Both are the best at what they do. The difference lies in the emphasis.  Jose Mourinho argued that David de Gea is the best in the world after he equaled a Premier League record by making 14 saves in the 3-1 win at Arsenal last week. United have conceded the fewest goals in the division and De Gea has the most clean sheets, with a save completion rate of 86.1 per cent.  City’s Ederson, meanwhile, is the best on the ball. His 85.3 per cent pass completion rate shows his upbringing as an outfield player. “Modern football requires those skills because it’s changed,” he said.

Southampton will play Arsenal later this afternoon to complete a day of exciting soccer action.  Recent games between these two sides on the south coast have produced some emphatic scorelines – Southampton won 4-0 on Boxing Day two years ago to throw Arsenal’s title challenge into disarray, but in two trips to St Mary’s in 2017, Arsenal have scored seven and conceded none. Mauricio Pellegrino is expected to stick with in-form striker Charlie Austin despite Shane Long recovering from a calf problem as he looks to improve that record. Arsène Wenger will be without defender Shkodran Mustafi but Theo Walcott, who scored a hat-trick against his former club in January’s FA Cup win, should be available despite a tight calf. Arsenal is currently 6th in the standings, Southampton twelfth.
