Jake Herbert debuts in his first Olympics after winning at the 2012 U.S. Wrestling Team Trials. The Pittsburgh, PA native was considered one of Team USA's best prospects since he came onto the scene as a wrestler at Northwestern University.
Jake was a standout wrestler in high school, compiling a 141-18 overall record. An honor roll student his senior year, Herbert also won the Concept of Physics Student of the Year award as a senior. He excelled as a Northwestern Wildcat, ultimately winning the Hodge Trophy (NCAA's wrestling version of the Heisman) as a senior. In addition, Herbert became the university's first NCAA champion since 1990 as a junior, compiling a perfect 32-0 mark. At NCAA finals that year, he beat future Olympian Jake Varner.
A world silver medalist in 2009, Herbert was considered a heavy favorite heading into 2012 Trials. When Athens gold medalist Cael Sanderson decided to return to the sport, that all changed. Sanderson ended up dropping out before the tournament, leaving the door open for Herbert.
In London, Herbert unleashed a dominant 8-0 period against Cuban Humberto Arencibia Martinez en route to his victory, but then lost in the quarterfinals to Azerbaijan's Sharif Sharifov. Herbert's coach challenged a scoring decision that awarded Sharifov 6 points and Herbert 0 points during a wrestling scramble.
Sadly, Jake then proceeded to fall to Ibrahim Bolukbasi (TUR) in the men's freestyle 84kg(185 lbs) Repechage Round 2.
