Sunday Sport: Pan American Games, Pacific Nations Rugby, USA Swimming

This is the second Sunday of three in the Pacific Nations Cup, an international rugby union competition held between three Pacific nations: Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. This 2019 edition of the tournament also includes the national teams of Canada, Japan and United States.

First held in 2006, the tournament is intended to strengthen the Tier 2 rugby nations by providing competitive test matches in a tournament format, over three weekends.  Previously, Japan participated from 2006 to 2015, New Zealand from 2006 to 2009, Australia from 2007 to 2008, and Canada and the United States from 2013 to 2015.

Historically, Fiji is the top team, having garnered five overall championships in tournament history.  Manu Samoa is second with three championships.  Of invited teams, the Junior All Blacks, who have only been invited three times, have won all three times.  Fourth in the overall standings is Japan with two overall wins, and New Zealand Maori with one.

This year the Japan is leading the overall table with 10 points, with the United States in second with 9 points, and third shared, with 5 points, Fiji and Samoa.  Japan had toppled World Champions Fiji, and won convincingly over Tonga.  The US Eagles beat Canada, and then snatched a victory over Samoa in injury time.

Watch for more news this weekend, and next week's game between Japan and the US, which will decide it all.

Day Five of the 2019 Phillips 66 USA Swimming Nationals is ongoing today in Palo Alto, California.  Today the men's 200 meter IM will be contested, along with the 50m free and 4x100 medleys.

The 2019 Pan American Games (Spanish: Juegos Panamericanos de 2019), officially the XVIII Pan American Games and commonly known as the Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games, is a multi-sport event governed by the PanAm Sports Organization, being held in Lima, Peru from July 26 to August 11, 2019, with preliminary rounds in certain events having begun on July 24, 2019.

These Pan American Games are at venues in and around Lima, and are the largest sporting event ever hosted by the country.   Lima is the 7th city in South America to host the Pan American Games.   419 events in 39 sports are scheduled to be contested in Lima, which is the largest number of medal events ever held at a single edition of the Pan American Games.

Bodybuilding and surfing will be contested at the Pan-Am Games for the first time in 2019, while basque pelota (jai alai) will be reinstated after being absent from the 2015 Games.

Today's action includes diving, water polo and fencing.  The games continue through August 11th.

浦和レッドダイヤモンズ vs. Al Hilal Saturday Sport

Not your grandfather's Champions League, the Asian Champions League has been heating up in recent weeks, and has become much more interesting since it was started in 2003.   Saudi giants Al Hilal will attempt to end years of dominance by East Asian clubs when they take on Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds in the two-legged Asian Champions League final beginning Saturday.  Al Hilal are hopeful as they host Urawa in the first competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Clubs from the Asian Football Confederation's eastern regions have won the last five Champions Leagues, and 10 overall since the competition's first edition in 2003.  The west is particularly strong now, though, with both Saudi Arabia and Iran qualifying for Russia, 2018.

Al Hilal captain Osama Hawsawi stated that "in World Cup qualifying we faced both Australia and Japan and we qualified ahead of the former and defeated the latter.  There are strong teams in both East and West, of course, but it should be noted that two teams from the West qualified for the World Cup." Al Hilal has never won the Asian Champions League, but hopes to this year.  "We are determined to lift this trophy," Hawsawi said. "We reached the final because we worked hard and are intent on reaching this goal."

Urawa captain Yuki Abe was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2007, and he said he now wanted to lift the trophy again in honour of manager Takafumi Hori.  "I have had a lot of head coaches in my career, but Hori is one who has helped me improve, so I'd like to help win a big trophy for him," Abe, 36, said."  The winner of the final will take their place at the Fifa Club World Cup UAE 2017, alongside the likes of European champions Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, back on the continent, Soccer fans are gearing up for the Madrid Derby, Real Madrid vs. Atletico de Madrid.  Atletico has been playing in a newly refurbished stadium this season, and so this is the first such Derby played in the Estadio Metropolitano  "Wanda".  It is an important game, over and above the rivalry, because both Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid have been playing catch-up against Barcelona.  Only 900 of the 67,000 seats have been released to Real Madrid's fans.  Phenom Dani Ceballos, 21, will play in his first derby.  Real Madrid  has won only 7 of the last 11 games, whilst Atletico is undefeated in their past 11 games.

In the standings Madrid, in third, are eight points behind leaders and renegades Barcelona.   Atletico, in fourth, are also on 23 points, but has had terrible difficulty scoring.  Their last  15 games have featured one or no goals.  Seven teams have scored more than Atletico’s 16 in 11 games. But Real have their own problems upfront. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have only one league goal each so far this season. Valencia and Real Sociedad have both scored more goals than Real Madrid so far.  Attention shifts firmly towards club football for the next four months, with Madrid also featuring in the Fifa Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi next month.

In premiership soccer  Champions Chelsea face a stiff challenge to defend their Premier League title from in-form leaders Manchester City but will fight till the end in the race, midfielder Willian has said. City have won 10 of their opening 11 league games and sit at the top of the table, nine points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea.  "It's difficult," Willian told BBC's Football Focus. "Manchester City are playing very well but I think we can fight for the title until the end."  Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are second and third respectively, a point ahead of Antonio Conte's men.  "It is difficult to play when you were champion last season and to fight for the title again as every team wants to win against Chelsea," added the Brazil international.

Chelsea travel to West Bromwich Albion, who are 16th in the league, on Saturday.  Arsenal must win an "electric" North London derby against Tottenham.  Arsenal last beat Tottenham in a 2015 League Cup tie but have failed to register a league win over their neighbors since 2014, drawing four and losing two of the last six league meetings between the sides.  As Tottenham have risen to prominence over recent years, the derby has become more closely contested.  Arsenal are sixth in the standings, four points behind third-placed Tottenham and 12 behind leaders Manchester City, with six wins in 11 league games.

In the United States, in NCAA College Football, there is only one game today between ranked opponents, Number 24 Michigan (8-2, 5-2) at Number 5 Wisconsin (10-0, 7-0).   Should Wisconsin go undefeated they would most certainly go into the playoff.  Michigan is always a tough opponent, though, and could come away with a win today.  Wisconsin beat Iowa 38-14 last week to pick up its first ranked win of the year, and Camp Randall Stadium is always a challenging location, but  Michigan is more well-rounded on defense and should be a tougher challenge.

Sport Saturday: Wresting in Paris, Aussie Rules ends regular season

Aussie. Rules. Football.  This is one of the international sports we enjoy following in this space.  In October, when the Grand Final has been played, there is a sense of loss, when play begins again in Autumn (southern Autumn) the season stretches out for months.  That seemingly endless season has reached an end, as this weekend, with the 23 weekend of league play, is the last.  The Grand Finals "the playoffs" begin soon, but for now, the great pageant, and contest, that is the Aussie Rules Football campaign is closing in an exciting way.

The concluding weekend began last night, with a contest between two teams who had little hope for anything but glory.  The Western Bulldogs lost to the Hawthorn Hawks, 15.9 (99) to 13.12 (90) at the Etihad Stadium.  Fans will remember the exultation with which the Western Bulldogs took ultimate glory last year, winning the league for the first time since the 1950s.  Apparently, that energy did not translate into fresh glory for the long season.  The Hawks sent retiring champion Luke Hodge out on a winning note, ending the Western Bulldogs season and Robert Murphy's career.  This emotional night saw the retirement of Bulldog's Matthew Boyd.  With little on the line the match became a celebration of football and of these three great careers.  Hodge, Murphy and Boyd were carried from the stadium side by side through a guard of honor.   Still, the Bulldogs will have some soul searching, as they played without that special spark, and  they became the first team in some time to miss the finals the year after their flag.  The Bulldogs were well served by several players, but, like their season, they just couldn't get their game going for sustained periods and never looked convincing, finishing the season with more questions than answers.

This space's pick for today's action is an epic clash between numbers two and three in the standings, as the number 3 Geelong Cats take on the number 2 Greater Western Sydney Giants at the Simonds Stadium. Over their last five meetings, the teams are roughly even.   It was just two weeks ago the Cats' run to the finals was precariously placed by injuries of key players.  The cats had unexpected wins over  Richmond in round 21 and then Collingwood on last Saturday. Their wins have sealed a top-four finish, and a victory on Saturday night would catapult them over Greater Western Sydney and into second. Meanwhile, the Giants can finish top with a win (if Adelaide loses to West Coast), after winning their past four games. The Giants have yet to take a win at Simonds Stadium, so the Cats are favored, but it should be a marvelous contest, emblemic of the best of Aussie Rules Football on the final weekend of regular play.

Wrestling is one of the most ancient sports still contested in the world today.  So called "professional wrestling" definitely has its place and fans, and is considered by many a positive contribution to the sport.  Traditional forms of wrestling are sometimes eclipsed by "professional wrestling," but they remain in existence and must be preserved as a living and progressive manifestation of the athletic games of ancient Greece.

The 2017 World Wrestling Championships are being contested this weekend, in France, without the fanfare, publicity, or funding of "professional wrestling," but with the professional and amateur athletes who contest the sport in the traditional way.  They are the 14th edition of the combined championships and began August 21  in Paris at the Accor Hotels Arena.  They wrap up tomorrow, Sunday the 27th.  This is a combined event, held each year since 2005.  Until 2003, each of the three styles represented had their own tournaments.  The Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling tournament began in 1904, and the Men's Freestyle Wrestling tournament began in 1951. The Women's Freestyle championships were first staged in 1987.  These all ended in 2003, and after a pause for the 2004 Olympics, the combined events started in 2005.  The is the seniors championship. The juniors championship was contested earlier this month in Tampere, Finland, and the cadets championship will be contested next month in Athens, Greece.

In team competition so far, the United States leads in freestyle, Russia in Greco-Roman, and Japan in the women's freestyle division, where they have a resounding and convincing dominance, having almost swept the gold medals.  The team competition is decided by points, not medal count.   Overall, Japan leads the medal count, followed by Turkey, Armenia, the United States, with Belarus and Germany tied for fifth place.  Russia is second to Japan in the overall medals count, 8 to 7, but lacks a gold medal to move it up the medals chart.   Each participating nation was able to send 24 wrestlers to contest this year's tournament,  readers of this space may recognize such great wrestlers as Georgia's Geno Petriashvili and Hungary's Balázs Kiss.

Sport Sunday: Tour, Sumo, Golf, Aquatics, 日本, 中华人民共和国

Tour de France:

Each year France's grand festival of cycling kicks off in grand style, and keeps the French at home to welcome the Tour as it passes through their village. This year the Tour began in Dusseldorf, Germany, on July 1st, to the great acclaim of the Germans.  The second stage also began in Dusseldorf, before a slow journey back to France via Belgium and Luxembourg.  La Grande Boucle, as it is called, is a chase for the overall champions yellow jersey, but also a chase for glory. Sadly, this year's Tour has again been tainted by scandal. This year the scandal was on the part of the organizers and judges, not on the cyclists, and had nothing to do with cycling.  Instead, in the first two weeks they made boneheaded decisions, time after time, starting with the ejection of champion sprinter fan favorite Peter Sagan. The UCI said that should never have taken place.

African born English cyclist Chris Froome, riding for the SKY team,  all but wrapped up a third consecutive Tour de France triumph as he outpaced his rivals in the penultimate day time trial won by Polish cyclist Maciej Bodnar, riding for Bora,  on Saturday.  Last to go, the Team Sky rider was the third quickest of the 167 to tackle the 22.5 kilometre course that started and finished in Marseille's Orange Velodrome soccer stadium, extending his lead to 54 seconds going into Sunday's ceremonial ride into Paris. Incidentally, the Orange Velodrome started as a velodrome, and continued that way as it was retrofitted for soccer and rugby, the wooden velodrome track was ultimately removed in the 1980s.

Chris Froome will not be removed, though, and if he avoids any calamities on the 103km trek from Montgeron to the Arche de Triomphe on Sunday's last stage, he will take his overall Tour wins to four in the last five years, one behind cycling greats Miguel Indurain of Spain, Belgian's Eddy Merckx and Frenchmen Bernard Hinault and Jacques Anquetil, and three behind American Lance Armstrong.  In Saturday's stage, another Polish cyclist, Michal Kwiatkowski of Team Sky was second.    If, indeed,  the ceremonial ride remains ceremonial on Sunday, and every indication is that it is, Froome will win the Tour, Colombia's Rigoberto Uran will come second, and Frenchman Romain Bardet third.

Budapest, Hungary:  Aquatic Worlds

FINA Swimming Worlds provides the best in action for the aquatic sports every other Summer, and this year is no exception!  Week one has featured the open water swims, and more of interest to our readers, the Diving competition, and the Water Polo tournament, week one.

Group play in the water polo tournament has certainly provided lots of action, and lots of ups and downs this week, and is a week which shall be remembered.  With the riotous crowds and fantastic atmosphere at the Alfred Hajos Pool, the days ahead promise wonderful water polo.
The leaders of each group will next play on Tuesday.  Today features play ins for the second and third placed teams in each group, and it promises much excitement.  Today's headline match is Spain, behind Serbia and Greece in Group D, against Russia, second in Group B. In other play-in matches, Brazil, which took second in Group A on the strength of a 6-6 tie with Canada, will face Australia, third in Group B. Kazakhstan, with a win over the Canadians on Wednesday, will face Italy, Group B’s second place team. In the fourth match Japan, which has only advanced once in FINA Worlds (2011), will play Greece, the second-place team in Group C.
The winners of Sunday’s matches will face four rested teams on Tuesday; either Brazil or Australia will earn the dubious honor of a match against Serbia. Hungary will draw the winner of the Spain vs. Russia winner; Croatia will face the Italy vs. Kazakhstan winner, and whomever wins the Greece vs. Japan match will play Montenegro.
The men's diving competition concluded on in  stellar way on Saturday night, with a stirring competition which resulted in a win by Tom Daley of England, The final day of diving from Danube Arena in Budapest saw Great Britain’s Tom Daley prevail over 2016 Olympic champion Chen Aisen for the gold medal in the men’s 10m platform.  Last year, in the Olympics, Daley failed to reach the finals competition.  This year he made it through to the final in 2nd position, and once he got there he performed perfectly.  Daley received a total of 12 perfect-10 scores over the course of his six dives, and twice scored over 100 on a dive. He totalled 590.95 points, beating out masterful Chinese diver Chen by a slim margin (585.25). The 23-year-old regains the world title after winning it eight years ago in Rome.  Yang Jian won bronze for China, giving them two medals in the final event to cap an incredible meet that saw China win eight of the thirteen events. Russian Aleksandr Bondar took 4th after qualifying 1st from the semis, and Ukrainian Maksym Dolgov moved up to 5th after being the last qualifier (12th) for the final in the semis.

Just a few hours prior to this performance in the 10m, Daley won a silver medal in the mixed 3m synchro with teammate Grace Reid. China won gold, as Li Zheng and Wang Han combined for a score of 323.70, and the Canadian pair of Jennifer Abel and Francois Imbeau-Dulac won bronze.

China’s 8 gold medals in this year's diving competition is down from the 10 won in Kazan, as this year five other countries won one gold each. Russia finishes 2nd on the medal table with 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

British Open

South Africa's Branden Grace moved into contention at the British Open on Saturday with his record-breaking third round of 62.  Grace's round is the lowest in the history of the majors.  He incredibly moved from four over par to four-under par overnight, just two behind leader Jordan Spieth of the United States, and level with Matt Kuchar. England's Ian Poulter, and current US Open champion Brooks Koepka were both three-under overnight.  Earlier, Australia's Jason Day was one of a number of players to score 65 in the benign conditions that contrasted sharply with the miserable weather late on Friday.  The British Open wraps up today in what promises to be a nail biting final round.

Japan:  Sumo Wrestling

Mongolian Hakuho has smashed the sumo wrestling record with his 1,048th win.  The grand champion, took down Takayasu yesterday in a frenetic bout, to deafening cheers at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.  He is now the "yokozuna", or grand champion.  With his 1,048th win, Hakuho surpassed former wrestler Kaio's record, in place since 2011.  The 32-year-old Mongolian was so small when he arrived in Japan at age 15 that only a minor sumo "stable" would take him.

"I'm glad that I was able to show this victory to the fans," the now 6'3" (almost two meter) wrestler said, struggling to catch his breath after the historic win against his "ozeki"-ranked rival.

Hakuho's success comes as foreign wrestlers increasingly dominate Japan's 15-century-old sport.  The sumo association, though,  forbids foreign nationals from becoming sumo master, or "oyakata" - a title that successful wrestlers often seek after they retire. Since Japan continues to forbid dual citizenship, Hakuho may renounce his Mongolian citizenship in order to become oyakata, but that will be when his competition career is over.  Hakuho's father is regarded as a national hero in Mongolia,  as the country's first Olympic medalist, a silver for wrestling in 1968.

Soccer certainly continues somewhere in the world.
