Sport Sunday: Six Nations, Man U

In Europe, this is weekend four of five of Six Nations Rugby with a game between Ireland and France on tap for today.  Italy currently has no wins in the tournament, with France not much better at one from the bottom.  Wales currently heads the competition, with England close behind.  The middle ground is shared by Scotland and Ireland, with similar points totals.  The competition wraps up next week.

In the USA, NCAA Basketball contests their conference championships this weekend, with many colleges hoping for a berth in the big dance, should they do well in their respective tourneys.

In the English Premier League, Arsenal takes on Manchester United at Emirates Stadium this evening, in an important game for both teams. Arsenal seems to have the best position going into today's game.  Slightly.  Man U has already beat Arsenal at home once this season, and is hoping for another win.  A win could mean a Champions' League pick for next weekend, a lose is likely to land the disappointed team in the Europa League.  Arsenal need to do things differently to achieve a different outcome.  Needless to say both teams will be playing like never before.

Saturday Sport: Premier League Finals and IPL, Preakness

In India:  This is the last weekend of regular play before the playoffs begin in IPL, India Premier League Cricket.  Saturday, the Rajasthan Royals take on Royal Challengers Bangalore, potentially for a place in the play-offs. Later, the  Sunrisers Hyderabad will be pitted against Kolkata Knight Riders, which also has playoff meaning.  Hyderabad have already reached the qualification round, as they are at the top of the standings.

Unless they are creamed by Kolkata, they will remain at the top of the table, with Chennai second.  Kolkata are in third place and are, indeed, formidable  opponents.  Either of the Royals could best Kolkata in the standings, depending on the outcome.   On Sunday, Mumbai visit the basement team, Delhi with an NRR superior to even Bangalore's (0.384). Of course, Bangalore could either reduce the NRR gap or even overtake Mumbai in this regard depending on how big their margin of victory over Rajasthan is likely to be.

In the English Premier League, Manchester United have a chance to salvage the season, and their reputation, whilst meeting Chelsea.  United’s FA Cup rivalry with Chelsea is a mostly modern affair. The pair meet at Wembley Stadium in the cup final on Saturday, the third time they have done so since 1994.  Historically, they have clashed 14 times in the competition, with United winning eight of those games and losing only four. Nine of those encounters have come since that 1994 final, which United triumphed 4-0.

United came from behind with goals in besting Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinals  to win 2-1. The semi-final was the first time United has beaten Spurs in London in five attempts.  United, who have won 12 FA Cups and will match Arsenal’s record 13 wins if they triumph, will be hoping for a similar change in fortune against a team which has also found it easy to beat them in England’s capital in recent years.

In the USA, in Baltimore Maryland, the Preakness Stakes will be run at the Pimlico Race track this afternoon.   The Preakness was first run in 1873, and is the second of the Triple Crown, run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, and three weeks before the Belmont.  It is always run on the third Saturday of May. The course is 9.5 Furlongs, or 1 3/16 miles (1900m).   Justify, which won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, is a favorite.

Saturday Sport: Untimely Deaths, Cricket, NCAA Hoops, Six Nations Rugby

Lots of late Winter/Early Spring sports here at SR, or in the south, Late Summer/Early Autumn...

In the Cricket world, Australia continues its tour of South Africa, with a 2nd Test at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth, March 9th -13th. At stumps, after the second day of play, Australia is leading convincingly.  Hosts   South Africa trail by 204 runs with 9 wickets remaining in the 1st innings.  Kagiso Rabada, Faf du Plessis, and the South Africans are not cowed by this lead, as Australia chose to bat first, and their lead is actually the lowest lead in a while they have made in the first at bat in their international test matches.  So, today's (tomorrow's) next meeting should test their mettle.  Meanwhile, England continues their tour of New Zealand with a  5th ODI at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

In other Cricket news, the  ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 is taking place in Zimbabwe.  The national teams of ten countries are playing between last Sunday and March 25th to be able to compete with the automatic qualifiers in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.  Countries competing include the West Indies,  Afghanistan, hosts Zimbabwe, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates.  The tournament beings with Round Robin, in group play, and then continues through knockout, following the One Day International Format.  Saturday's matches include the West Indies playing Ireland at the Harare Sports Club, and Zimbabwe playing Hong Kong at the Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

This weekend is the fourth meeting of Six Nations Rugby, which is played each February and March on select weekends.  Ireland, who is so far undefeated in the tournament, hosts Scotland at the Aviva Stadium.  Scotland is doing well in the tournament, also, having won lost against Wales the first week, they have rebounded to beat England and France.  Today, France will host England today at the Stade de France.  France, having lost their first two games, beat Italy last week.  England, having won their first two matches, lost to Scotland last week.  The answer on whether Ireland can run the table will be better answer after today's games.

In European Soccer, in the Premier League, Manchester United vs. Liverpool should be a hard fought match.    United showed great character to come from two down at Crystal Palace at Monday and win, but the result flatters a performance that for the large part was disappointing. Liverpool are a better side than Palace and with Mohamed Salah continuing to excel, Jurgen Klopp's men are well poised to exploit the fact that United are misfiring at present. in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich will meet  Hamburg in a match today.

Sunday is NCAA Mens' Basketball selection Sunday for the teams which will take part in the annual dance, the tournament to determine number one.  So, today is chock full of semifinals and finals in various conferences, all wrapping up prior to the selection who tomorrow afternoon.  In the Ivy League Basketball Tournament,  Harvard takes on  Cornell in the first semifinal, and then Yale takes on Penn (Pennsylvania), in the second semifinal game, all played at The Palestra in Philadelphia. Did you know Cornell is in the Ivy League?

We could not finish this article without thanking our Italian correspondent for alerting us to a tragic situation in Serie A Soccer.  On Thursday, thousands gathered in Florence for the funeral of Italian Serie A star Davide Astori.  The sudden death of the  31-year-old player, who captained his Fiorentina club, and played on the Italian National Squad,  has sparked outpouring of grief in this football-mad country.  Children wearing Fiorentina's distinctive purple formed a guard of honour outside the Santa Croce basilica in the city as Astori's coffin was carried out after the service.  Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and his past Juventus teammate Giorgio Chiellini were among the mourners having flow back from London where the Turin team dedicated their Champions League victory over Tottenham on Wednesday to Astori.  Chiellini after the match said: "We dedicate the win to him. He is on our minds on this day. I cried many times. He was a fantastic player."  Fellow internationals Daniele De Rossi and Mario Balotelli were also among players present and the entire Fiorentina team, dressed in sober dark suits and ties, came to pay their respects.

Meanwhile, the European sporting world has been rocked by two other recent untimely deaths.  17 year old Neapolitan swimmer phenom Mario Riccio was training on Sunday afternoon when he felt pain in his arm.  In a few moments his heart had stopped, and could not be restarted, not even by a defibrillator. His coach was, of course, present at his death, along with his parents and siblings, who were spending their Sunday afternoon watching his training  He was already making a name for himself in Italian and European swimming, and is described as  an excellent student and athlete, with good all around attitude.  In France, the Tours Football Club reported the sad and untimely death of 18 year old Thomas Rodriguez.  He died last week in his sleep for yet undetermined causes. Our thoughts and prayers are with their friends and families.

So as not to end on such a sad note, we call your attention to the fact that Aussie Rules Football pre season has concluded, following a nontraditional format played on a soccer field, for two ten minute halves.  We will introduce more about the upcoming season next weekend. That's the surest sign of a coming Winter yet!

Boxing Day Premiers

While the Bundesliga is on Winter break, the English take the opposite approach.  Each club in Premier League soccer will play four times across 15 days as the Premier League program ramps up over Christmas. Nearly every English Premier League team is in action on Boxing Day as well as two Scottish teams and two Italian teams, playing in the Coppa Italia.

There aren't any outstanding matches on tap in this season's Boxing Day slate.  Several games, though, will affect the race for the top four. At present, Manchester City is on top, followed by Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Arsenal.

Spurs, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are all at home on Tuesday, and anything but three points would be a disappointment for those top four contenders. Manchester United is in second with 42 points, but Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all within eight points.

The title race is far less dramatic. Matching the outstanding performance of Barcelona in Spain, Manchester City is a staggering 13 points clear of Manchester United in the Premier League as of Christmas Day, a remarkable lead considering just 19 matches have been played. Whatever the outcome of Tuesday's games, some teams will gain points on Man City, at least temporarily, as they do not play again until Wednesday.

In Italy, where Boxing Day is not observed,  Lazio will play host to Fiorentina on Tuesday evening at the Olympic Stadium.  The teams are fairly evenly matched in their last five games, so this competition should be fierce.
