Sunday Sport in Brief: AFC, NFC, Asia Cup.

In the USA:  Don't miss the Conference Championship games today in the National Football League.  The two conference winners decided today will play in the Super Bowl, two weeks from today.  In the first game, the Los Angeles Rams will play the New Orleans Saint, In New Orleans, in the NFC Championship.  In the American Conference, the New England Patriots travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs.  Both the Saints and Kansas City do best at home, which cannot always be said of the Patriots, when they leave the safe confines of Foxboro.

The Round of 16 is being played in the Asia Cup of Soccer, today through Tuesday.  Congratulations to those who have won in today's games, Viet Nam, China, and Japan.  Tomorrow, Japan takes on Saudi Arabia, Australian meets Uzbekistan, and the United Arab Emirates meets Kyrgyzstan.  In Tuesday's action, South Korea meets Bahrain, and Qatar meets Iraq.

Saturday Sport: NCAA Football

It seems that college football is just beginning every year, when it reaches the end of the season.  Just under three months of bliss, and we have arrived at championship Saturday.  Today, or this weekend for some, the various conferences will play their finals, to determine conference champs throughout the land.  These games are among the most exciting of the season.  Sure, there's the "playoff," which still doesn't determine a sole number one in the land to everyone's satisfaction.  The Bowl Games used to be where the greatest rivalries were played out.  Instead, today watch for some brilliant action.

Number 10 Washington has already  beaten Number 17 Utah for the Pac-12 title.  The game was a defensive battle, in which the 10-3 final score was already set in the third quarter.  Meanwhile, the MidAmerican Conference Championship was won by Northern Illinois University 30-29 over Buffalo on Friday night.

Today's games include the Big 12 Championship, the Texas Longhorns, who have had a resurgence this year against the Oklahoma Sooners,  the Big 10 Championship, featuring Chicago's Northwestern Wildcats vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the ACC Conference Championship, featuring the University of Pittsburgh Panthers vs. the Clemson Tigers.

Likely the most anticipated game on tap today is the SEC Championship this afternoon.  The SEC is overrated by all the commentators, but it does provide some fine football.  This afternoon's game features the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. the Georgia Bulldogs.  Last season’s national finalists have been on a collision course throughout the fall, and will meet up again today. Alabama could conceivably still be included in the National Championships with a 12-1 mark should the Crimson Tide come up short against the Bulldogs, but they are in no mood to test that theory this time around.  Both teams should be playing some really fine football.

Sunday Sport: MLB Championships

The 30 modern teams of the Major League Baseball in the United States play a long season.  Lasting over six months the regular season consists of thousands of games, with each of the teams  playing almost every day, and sometimes twice a day.

But it all comes to this, the League Championships seasons, the last stop on the way to the World Series of Baseball.  This Autumn we see the boys of summer playing their hearts out as each of the four teams vies for a spot in the overall championship.  This Fall's American League Championship Series pits the Boston Red Sox against recent champs the Houston Astros.  In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers are combating the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot.

Both championships will prove to be exciting as the teams are evenly matched. In both of the best of seven series the teams are tied one to one, with the Boston Red Sox winning their game just a few moments ago.

Game three in the Brewers vs. Dodgers series will be played Monday night at Dodger Stadium.    Game three in the Astros vs. Red Sox series will be played Tuesday night in Houston.

Sport Sunday

St. Louis is a beautiful city which is sometimes victim of it's own provincialism. St. Louis has beautiful areas, which are very wealthy, and other areas which, while once beautiful,  have become quite squalid.

The beautiful golf course at Bellerive Country Club, in Town and Country, Missouri  is the focus of St. Louis today, as it hosts the final round of the PGA Championship.  While title of national champion in golf has been given in golf, at least since 1894, the PGA was founded in 1916 and held their first championship that Autumn.  This 100th championship is the last to be contested, for the foreseeable future, in Fall, as next May the PGA championship will shift to Spring.

Sundays final round promises to be exciting.  28 year old Brooks Koepka promises to have an exciting day, as  he finished Saturday in the lead, and may well keep that lead.  Thanks to a four-under 66 Saturday at Bellerive Country Club, Koepka holds a two-stroke lead through 54 holes in the 100th PGA Championship, the second time this year he’ll sleep on a third-round lead in a major.  At 12-under 198, Koepka is two ahead of former Masters champion, Australian Adam Scott, who needed a special exemption to get into the field. The list of pursuers within four shots include Spaniard Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Tiger Woods, Jason Day and defending champion Justin Thomas.

Meanwhile....  In Europe....

English Premier League began their regular season this weekend.  While most Europeans are celebrating their annual vacation period, England is in the back to school mode, apparently, as their brothers across the pond.

The Spaniards have saved this weekend for a preliminary return to Soccer, with the Supercopa battle Sunday.  Barcelona will look to add yet another domestic trophy to their collection when they take on Sevilla, on territory no longer part of Spain.  The trophy will be a one-off match played at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier, Morocco.

Sevilla must hope a change of country can help them upset the odds after a chastening 5-0 defeat by Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey in April. With Barca having won both the league and the cup, Sevilla provide the opposition once again.  The only major Spanish honour Barca have not won in the last four seasons was the league title in 2017, lost to Real Madrid.

They have been less dominant in the Supercopa, beating Sevilla in 2016 but losing to Athletic Bilbao in 2015 and Madrid 12 months ago.

Saturday Sport: Kittens, Swans, Crickets, Hurdles

It has been a weeks of surprises in sport, some weirdness, some upsets:

USA:  Baseball:  The St. Louis Cardinals were losing 5 to 4 to their cross state rivals, the Kansas City Royals, when a cat invaded the field and stopped play.  The cat did not look feral, but certainly did not like the attention it was receiving.  Originally approaching a Royals outfielder, the cat realized his mistake, clearly a feline of good taste, and continue to flee toward the outfield wall.   A Cardinals groundskeeper risked life and limb, in short sleeves and short pants, to track down the feline, so that play could continue.  The cat did not go down easily, biting and scratching across the entire outfield, and infield for that matter.  The unfortunate and importunate groundskeeper dropped the cat outside of the ball field, as he headed for first aid. A woman insisted on taking the cat, but then stated she had lost it in the park across from the stadium.  The search continues.

The cat was renamed #RallyCat.  Baseball fans will remember #Buschie the #RallySquirrel from a few years ago, whose appearance during a game launched the suffering Cardinals into glory.  #RallyCat did not disappoint as it was his turn at bat.  After the distraction, Cardinal's veteran player Yadier Molina was at bat, and batted a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN, garnering four runs for the Cardinals, who held out to win the game.  The Cardinals have renamed him Yadier Meowlina, and he has since professed a great love for cats.  The next day the Cardinals hit a grand slam, the first time in their history this has happedn two games in a row.  Pictures of Yadier with his kittens are now all over the internet.  In more weird news, Cardinal's pitcher, Lance Lynn, was hit in the side of the head by a 110 mph ball, but continued the game unscathed.

The Cardinals have reignited the National League Central Division race these days with a six game win streak.  This should make their weekend games at the Atlanta Braves doubly interesting. Division Leaders Chicago Cubs have entered their characteristic August slump.

In the USA:  Today features PGA Golf Third-round play in the 99th PGA Championship, from Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is golf's final major of the season, with Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth winning the first three. The purse for this tournament is $10.5 million

In London, United Kingdom, the Track and Field Worlds continue.  As covered elsewhere in this space, 21 year old Norwegian Hurdler Karsten Warholm apparently surprised himself most of all, when he took the Gold medal in the 400 m hurdles.  Please read Rexswimguy's excellent coverage, but look around the net for pictures of the amazed athlete like the one featured here.  They're  better than a baseball player covered with kittens.

Saturdays action at the Track and Field Worlds includes various events in the Decathlon, including the 110 m hurdles, the discuss, javelin,  and pole vault.  The Decathlon will come to a stirring conclusion in this evening's 1500 meters race.  Today also features finals in men's 5000 meters, javelin, and 4x100 m relay.

In Sri Lanka, India continues their tour with their 3rd Test at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, also known as Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium (Sinhala: පල්ලෙකැලේ ජාත්යන්තර ක්රිකට් ක්රීඩාංගණය, Tamil: பல்லேகலை சர்வதேச கிரிக்கெட் விளையாட்டு மைதானம்) in Kandy.  This test begins today and lasts through
the 16th.   Pallekele is an ultra modern facility, which opened a few years ago and seats 22,000.  India has been dominating the series so far, and with Sri Lanka missing some key players due to injuries, the hosts will have to rely on surprise to hold out for a win.  No national team from India has ever swept a series of three tests or less on foreign soil, but under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, this team may pull out that honor.

In Aussie Rules football:  The 2017 season has been one of the most exciting and intriguing in recent memory, as many matches have been close, and could have gone either way.  On a weekly basis at least one fan base has been left wondering how different things could have been if that crucial set shot or turnover went in their team’s favor.  In a season as close as 2017 - it is the close margins in games which may well decide who finishes in the top eight.  This is especially challenging in that as of the end of Round 20 there have been 37 games decided by 10 points or less.  Every team apart from Adelaide have been involved in a game which has been decided by 10 points or less thus far.  Today will see contests between the Sydney Swans vs. Fremantle at the Sydney Cricket Grounds, the Geelong Cats vs. Richmond, the Brisbane Lions vs. the Gold Coast Suns, Essendon vs. the Adelaide Crows, and the West Coast Eagles vs. Carlton.  The Fremantle Dockers make a rare trip to Sydney for a clash with the Swans at the Sydney Cricket Grounds, and it looms as a tough assignment for Ross Lyon's team who showed some good signs in their win over the Suns last week, just their second from their past 10 games. Sydney, currently 6th in the standings,  bounced back from a loss to Hawthorn to smash Geelong and reaffirm its status as a premiership contender. The Swans' miserly defense is settled and in form, so it's hard to see Fremantle kicking a big enough score to cause the home side any trouble.  In their last five meetings, the Swans have beat the Dockers, three games to two.

Meanwhile, back in Europe, English Premiership Soccer is ramping up again, as are many of the other Ligues, Ligas, Serie, etc.  Seems like last season was just wrapping up.  More tomorrow.

Sport Saturday: Usain Bolt, German Fussball, AFL, India Cricket, NBA and UNICEF

London, Great Britian, United Kingdom:  In Track and Field:   IAAF World Track & Field Championships began yesterday and will be contested through August 13th.   These are held every two years somewhere in the world, and this year that venue is the Olympic Stadium in London, UK.   Day 2 promises many heats, qualifications and preliminaries, as we can expect, this early on in the finals.  A few events will host finals in afternoon action, notably Discus, Long Jump, 100 metres and 10,000 metres.  Heptathlon competition continues throughout the day.   The 100 metre race will feature Usain Bolt of Jamaica, appearing in his last Worlds, and Christian Coleman and Justin Gatlin of the United States.  The 10,000 metre race features Mo Farah of Great Britain, also appearing for the final time in this championship.

The NBA and UNICEF team up this afternoon from Johannesburg, South Africa, with a game featuring international NBA players.   Team Africa vs. Team World is a showcase of NBA standouts, all as a fundraiser for the international children's charity and other charities.   Luol Deng and Thabo Sefolosha captain Team Africa, while Dirk Nowitzki and Kemba Walker are Team World captains.

In Germany:  Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will battle it out for their sixth German Super Cup title on Saturday when they clash at Signal Iduna Park, a home game for Borussia Dortmund.  The pair have won the trophy five times apiece, as well as monopolizing German Soccer competition for years, and Saturday's winner will become the most successful team in the competition's history.  Since the competition return in 2010, both sides have won twice.  Prior to 1996, when the competition was furloughed for fourteen years, each team had won three times.  Neither side comes into the clash on the back of a strong pre-season.   The Bavarians have been defeated by Arsenal, as well as both Milan sides, and they were shot down 3-0 at home to Liverpool on Tuesday.  Indeed, while neither side are at their best, there will still be a great deal of talent on show, which could make for an entertaining contest.

In International Test Cricket, India continues its tour of Sri Lanka with the third day of their 2nd test at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo.  India has so far shewed its utter dominance in the series, with Sri Lanka responding admirably, and some great cricket being played.  India, who lead the three-match series 1-0, need a win to clinch the series. The hosts need at least a draw to keep their hopes alive.  Meanwhile, in England, South Africa continues their tour of England with the second day of their 4th Test at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Australia:  Week 20 of the Australian Rules Football Season:  Greater Western Sydney Giants  vs. Melbourne Demons.  Saturdays top match in the 20th weekend of  Aussie Rules Footy, at least where the standings are concerned, seems to be The greater Melbourne Demons at the Western Sydney Giants. The two will meet in the UNSW Canberra Oval (aka the Manuka Oval) for an exciting match this afternoon.  Currently the Giants are 3rd and the Demons 7th in the standings.   The Giants, who last met the Demons last season,  found a way to get past Fremantle last week for their first win since round 14 and while they weren't exactly convincing, it was a valuable four points. They'll need to find even more momentum to get past Melbourne, a side coming off a disappointing loss to 17th-ranked North Melbourne in Tasmania. The Giants have won seven of the last eight games they have played at the UNSW Oval, and three of their last five games with Melbourne.  The Demons, though, are ahead in their lifetime series five games to four.  Fans are in for a treat, and with so much on the line in terms of ladder positioning, it's one of the most important matches of the season.
